Who are we?We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data - legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. Government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time tm).
Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures. We are one. We are legion. And we're trying really hard not to forget.- from.Links!!.Rule(s).Be excellent to each other.isn't.No memes or.No unapproved sale threads.Related Subreddits.

Assuming the same Bluray disk source, would x264 or x265 rips be better? I'm seeing x264 versions of an hour long show coming in a little over 4GB per file with the video bitrate being 8-10k depending on episode. The x265 version, same source, are coming in a little over 1GB per episode but the bitrate is much smaller (2500-3k).There may be a better subreddit if talking specifics with codecs but I assume some of you have strong opinions regarding archival quality for videos and I'd like to get your input. Disk space isn't really an issue here but if the quality is realistically the same, obviously I'd prefer the smaller file size. For 1080p and below, think of x264 vs x265 as similar to AAC-LC vs AAC-HE.The only time you would consider using AAC-HE is for very low bitrates, eg 64kbps (for stereo). You never use it at 128kbps or above. It's not a case that HE is better across the board, it's more that it can make things less bad at very low bitrates.Similar for x265.
If for some reason you need to use extremely low bitrates for a given resolution, then x265 can make things less bad/artifacty than x264. But if you are aiming for good quality at reasonable bitrates, stick with x264.
