“Unique” is not a term we get to use accurately these days in the games industry, what with numerous franchises lurking around, putting the same old stuff out year after year. And you could argue that I’m being somewhat ironic, considering that I’m saying that in a Zelda review. But Majora’s Mask is a game that is like no other and so, by definition, it is unique, regardless of the fact that the Legend of Zelda franchise is a startling 29 years old now.

The original Majora’s Mask came out on the Nintendo 64, about 15 years ago and was praised being unique and criticized for being fiendish. I’ve never had a chance to play the original (because, a) I was 6 when it came out and b) I was bought a Dreamcast) so I was excited to finally get my hands on the 3D remake after hearing many positives. The first thing I noticed is that this isn’t like any other Zelda game.
While controls feel natural and responsive, and the graphics are comfortably similar, the whole feel of Majora’s Mask is different. For starters, the pressure of the 3-day system can feel like you’re limited in how much you can explore, which is a shame, because it’s easily one of the franchises best points.
In fact, it’s a rather marmite, love-hate system that feels both restricting but also offers avenues to explore, as the scenery changes throughout. The amount of varying content over the three day period is fairly vast and it’ll take you a while to has to offer, though getting heart pieces and other items or events can be quite a pain, as you have to restart the cycle if you miss them. Majora’s Mask seems to be a showing off just how dark Nintendo can be. Death is a fairly common theme throughout, which is unusual for the usually child-friendly developer, which can be quite disturbing. After the Zora scene about halfway through the game, I don’t think I’ll be able to hear the Song of Healing again. The moon is also rather creepy looking and the screams of pain when Link puts on masks is also somewhat unpleasant.
At the same time though, I also appreciate the more adult storyline of impending doom and creepy elements, which allows me to have a greater appreciation than stories that Nintendo makes that feel more aimed at the younger persuasion of gamers. The other thing you’ll notice is the inclusion of masks, as you might’ve figured from the game’s title. All the masks in the game offer a different ability, which can range from transforming into a Goron to a mask that allows you to march animals around. Each has their unique purpose in the game and most feel necessary in some way or another to complete the story and the large amount of sub-plot. The transformations all handle differently to Link, and each offer their own unique access to certain areas of the game’s overworld. They control well too and don’t require too much adjustment to the varied play styles. One drawback, however, is that game doesn’t really offer too much in the way of a challenge. There have been a fair few changes to stop the game from being as fiendish as the N64 original so that the game is more accessible, but you can’t help but feel like Nintendo went a little too far the other way with it. Majora’s Mask 3D isn’t unenjoyable though as a result, however, it does leave you wanting a little more from it.Under the hood, the game runs smoothly for the most part, just like Ocarina of Time 3D, although we did come across some framerate issues (which we could recreate) on several occasions during some areas of the game, which is a little disappointing as it shows that the polish didn’t quite get everywhere.
The gyroscope controls are well implanted too, and feel just as natural as you’d hope, although you’re always going to look like a bit of dork waving your 3DS around. The locked camera is also rather annoying too, with only the “L” button there to help move the occasionally stuck camera move back behind you instead of in front. It’s remedied on the New 3DS but people sticking with the old hardware are going to have a bad time.Whether you’re a Zelda fan or a 3DS owner looking for a solid action-adventure game, then you’ll be barking up the right tree with Majora’s Mask 3D. The improvements generally have a positive impact on the game and the story is appropriately dark. The 3-day system might put some of the explorers off and the lack of any major challenge outside the system may push away those more hardened gamers.
It’s a glorious remake of one of the most fiendish games in the franchise.
But it's the side-quests that really make the most out of this three-day format. All sorts of things are happening at specific times across the three-day schedule - whether it's a mugging that takes place in the outskirts of the game's hub of commerce Clock Town, to alien abductions of livestock out at a farm in the middle of the night. These events not only give this relatively small world a real purpose and place, but there's a great sense of discovery, and then satisfaction, in coming across and solving each individual problem. While time is Majora's Mask most interesting asset, having a limited amount of time is also source of some of its frustrations. Other non-time related frustrations often rear their head, too.
Having to swap out masks (more on them later) when talking to certain individuals is a regular annoyance, and the game regularly relies on mini-games for its side-quests, with some races featuring cheating rubber-banding intelligence to see you pipped at the post time and time and time again. Some sections also feel particular laborious. Take, for example (mild spoilers ahead), the quest to enter the mid-game Great Bay water temple. If you don't have many bottles at hand, you need to make repeat trips to two areas in order to rescue eggs. This is made more frustrating when one area has sentries who will kick you out of an area if you get spotted, and another that on a second visit, neglects to show you a secret path it presented to you the first time.
And moments like this are also made far more stressful when you only have a certain amount of time to finish them.Thankfully, in this 3DS remake, some things are a little smoother this time round. The decision to swap the N64 version's temporary saves for permanent ones is probably driven by the game's mobile nature, but it also allows you to reattempt a session from a mid-way point in case you run out of time. A hint stone - which debuted in - provides a video solution of what to do next if you're particularly stuck, which might be a more common occurrence this time round. Swapping items and checking the map is also a little faster thanks to the 3DS's second screen.Meanwhile, the Bomber's Notebook - a quest log that updates with side-quest progress, and explains which characters are where and then - has been expanded with a timesheet and more details of how much you've finished. Although it's not perfect - I found it fails to log everything it probably should - it makes a side-quest heavy game easier to keep on top of.There's also a similar visual overhaul as seen in the 3DS remake of, albeit one prone to occasional bouts of slowdown. Still, it looks incredible in 3D, and particularly great during rain, snow and the quick cutscene as you rewind time back to the very first day.The New 3DS (or Circle Pad Pro's) second analogue stick to control the camera isn't an essential addition but is still welcome - especially when trying to observe the game's many secrets, and tilting the handheld to aim arrows and other projectiles gives you much greater accuracy and speed than before.
' During my travels, a very important mask was stolen from me by an imp in the woods. All I ask is that you also get back my precious mask that the imp stole from me. Why, to someone like you, it should by no means be a difficult task.
The one thing is. I'm a very busy fellow. And I must leave this place in three days. How grateful I would be if you could bring it back to me before my time here is up.' —The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask ( ゼルダの伝説 ムジュラの仮面, Zeruda no Densetsu Mujura no Kamen ) is the sixth installment in the and the second and final installment to be released on the.
It was released in Japan on April 27, in Canada and the United States on October 24, 2000, and in Europe on November 17, 2000. The game is one of the most successful Zelda games, selling approximately 314,000 copies during its first week of sales in Japan and more than three million copies sold in total. The game features an unusual storyline for a Zelda title. Rather than the setting being as it is in most Zelda games, finds himself in the land of, a parallel world to Hyrule, featuring many characters physically identical to characters from Ocarina of Time.
A mysterious known as has been stolen by a mischievous imp known as the, and is being used to summon the to destroy the entire land of Termina. Link must stop the destruction within three days. Due to this apocalyptic looming urgency and the recurring theme of death, as well as the slightly spookier designs featured throughout the game (eg. The moon, the mask faces), many gamers consider Majora's Mask to be an overall dark game. Some also derive this darker aspect from the prominence of the number 4 - major locations, temples, masks, bosses, etc - and that the Japanese word for four (四 shi) is a homophone for death (死 shi) with the modern Japanese use of reading for cardinal numbers.Unlike Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask requires the use of the, allowing for a higher polygon count, resulting in improved graphics. Although well-received by critics - who praised its graphical improvements and a more original story compared to its direct predecessor - it was commonly remarked that the game's darker atmosphere and time-based gameplay would have less general appeal than Ocarina of Time; indeed, Majora's Mask never outsold it.

The Happy Mask Salesman eventually recovered it, but he too, was ambushed by the Skull Kid on his travels. Once he had the mask, the Skull Kid initially used its power for small-time mischief before summoning forth the Moon to destroy Termina.

GameplayThe gameplay of Majora's MaskThe gameplay of Majora's Mask is based on the same 3D computer graphics engine used in its predecessor, Ocarina of Time. Link retains a variety of basic actions, including walking, running, rolling, and limited jumping. Majora's Mask is the second game in the Zelda series to take place outside the land of Hyrule, placing Link (voiced by ) in a land by the name of Termina.
Link repeatedly returns to the point of his original appearance three days before the crash of the moon using the ' on the; he continuously relives these three days, collecting abilities and items required to prevent the catastrophe. Also, unlike Ocarina of Time, Link does more intricate jumps off of ledges, such as somersaults, cartwheels and diving. The gameplay in Majora's Mask is arguably deeper than that of Ocarina of Time, which features, and as tools to solve many of its puzzles. Majora's Mask retains these elements, and includes the use of, character transformations, and the limit of a three-day cycle to add further difficulty and variety to many quests in the game. While it is notably shorter than Ocarina of Time and has been criticized for recycling character models from its predecessor, it is still widely considered a successful and popular game.Masks and transformationsMasks, which first appear in a single sidequest in Ocarina of Time, play a much more important role in Majora's Mask. Whereas Ocarina of Time features only eight masks, Majora's Mask has 24 in total, a number of which are necessary to progress through the game. A few masks in Majora's Mask are invaluable, but many are designed to be useful only in certain situations, with several being used only once or twice. When in human form, Link uses a variety of weapons.
The is his standard weapon and is the most frequently used weapon in the game. Link can attack enemies with a vertical slash, a horizontal slash, a thrust, or a, while the is used for defending. The and arrows are typically used to attack a distant enemy or to activate a switch. Link can use to stun enemies, then inflict damage with another weapon. Bombs can be used to destroy enemies and other obstacles, while the is capable of latching onto enemies or objects and pulling them toward Link, or vice versa. Can be used as when set ablaze.Link transforming into a upon donning theThree special masks allow Link to transform into different species: the transforms Link into a, the changes him into a, and the turns him into a. Each form grants unique abilities: as a Deku Scrub, Link can perform a spin dash, shoot bubbles from his mouth, and skip across water a limited number of times.
Link can also launch himself into the air and slowly float down using; while airborne, he can drop Deku Nuts onto enemies from above. While in this form, Link is extremely vulnerable to fire attacks. The Goron transformation allows Link to punch foes with great strength, stomp the ground with his massive body, and curl into a ball and roll at rapid speed. Link's weight as a Goron causes him to sink immediately upon entering water as well as press down giant switches.
As a Zora, Link can punch and kick enemies, shoot -like fins from his arms, and swim rapidly through water. Many areas of the game can only be accessed by using these transformations.Link in his Zora formLink's Hylian, Deku, Goron, and Zora forms each receive different reactions from various non-player characters.
For instance, Link's Deku form is that of a Deku Scrub child, and thus guards will not allow him to exit Clock Town. These same guards give Link no trouble in his Goron, Zora, or Hylian forms, as the first two are those of adults, and the latter carries a sword. Even respond differently to Link's various forms.A special mask called the can be obtained at the end of the game if all of the other masks have been acquired. This mask can only be used in battles without the use of a. This mask transforms Link into Fierce Deity Link (also called ): a more powerful, seemingly adult version of himself, with face markings, fearsome white eyes, a bluish-silver tunic, and torso armor.
This form also sports a giant two-handed helix-shaped sword which is capable of shooting bursts of magical energy while. Fierce Deity Link is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama, who voiced adult Link in Ocarina of Time. Some other important masks are the, which helps retrieve the scattered throughout the four temples; the, which allows Link to run faster; the, which renders Link invisible to most non-player characters and enemies; and the, which emits unlimited bomb blasts at the expense of health—although Link can use his shield to block the explosion and avoid damage. Many other less valuable masks are only involved in optional sidequests.
Examples are the, which allows Link access to a hidden in a, and, which can initiate a long and complicated sidequest that offers several masks as prizes.Three masks other than the transformation masks are required to complete the game: the, which is needed for the to grant Link passage to; the, which allows Link to speak to and navigate the; and the, which allows Link to converse with and order them to open graves in, one of which contains a stone where the ' is engraved. The, though not strictly necessary for the completion of the game, is readily presented to the player during the course of the mandatory part of the game, and is extremely valuable; without it, the boss fight against becomes significantly harder.Three-day cycle.
